Midsummer in Finland

During the Finnish Midsummer celebrations, bonfires are very common and are lit by lakesides and by the sea. Birch branches are often placed on either side of the front door to welcome visitors. Swedish-speaking Finns often celebrate Midsummer with a maypole.

Midnight Sun is Good for Health

An important feature of midsummer in Finland is the white night and the midnight sun. Due to Finland's location around the Arctic Circle, the nights close to midsummer day are short or non-existent. This provides a great contrast to the darkness of winter.

Some studies claim that the sun can lower blood pressure. It's thought that the UV rays trigger the release of a compound called nitric oxide from the skin, which relaxes blood vessels and lowers blood pressure. So the midnight sun is also good for our health.

Ritual Include Cookouts, Sauna and Spending Time Together

Many Finns leave the cities at midsummer to spend time in the countryside. Nowadays, many spend a few days there, and some Finns spend their whole holiday in a lakeside or seaside cottage.

Rituals include cooking, taking a sauna and spending time together. This is how Finns recharge their batteries for the long winter.
